What is Woodlanders?
Woodlanders grew from the teaching work of artist and author Daniel Mack. In the fifteen years of teaching about rustic building,
he noticed that a larger part of each course was the need for like-minded people to just visit with each other, to share stories
and be in the company of people who had similar passions for natural forms. In 2000 and 2001 he worked with Maine woodworkers,
Alan Bradstreet and Dirk Leach, to fashion The Woodlanders Gathering, not quite a workshop, not quite a conference... But
a three-day mix of information, tools, demos and visiting.
The "gatherings" are in different parts of the country to share information, teach and learn from each other
and get to know each other, face to face, to support the lifestyles we are putting together. We are gardeners, artists, crafts
people, parents, grandparents, children, retirees and students. What brings us together is our awareness of the natural world.
Some of us practice wilderness skills, others make things from natural materials, others just enjoy walks.
In 2002, we had our first Midwest Gathering in Mineral Point, Wisconsin hosted by rustic enthusiasts and artists, Sandy
Scott & Judy Sutcliffe. In 2003 and 2004, the Gatherings expanded to two locations ...returning to Wisconsin and on the
East Coast in Hunter, New York at the Catskill Mountain Foundation. 2005 was the first time the gathering came to Warwick,
New York.
